You’ve found the person, you’ve got the ring, now it’s time to plan a proposal they’ll never forget. What better way to remember it than to hire a photographer to document the moment. There’s a good chance you’ve never proposed before, and a good chance this is your first time hiring a photographer yourself. I’ve been documenting big life moments for couples and families since 2018 and I’m here to help make this life moment unforgettable. Proposal photography is always a favorite of mine. There’s many options for proposing in Kansas City, but today we’ll talk about what proposal photography looks like.
When it comes to hiring a photographer to document your proposal, you have two main options: the “photo shoot” proposal, or the camouflaged photographer.
Your partner knows they’re doing a photo session but doesn’t know you’ll be popping the question in the middle of it.
Jackson arranged a photo session under the pretense of getting professional photos for their new home. Regan had been excited to work with me ever since I photographed her sister’s wedding in 2022, so she saw this as a fun opportunity. The session started as expected, with no hint of what was coming. Midway through, I gave Jackson the signal and positioned them so Regan would turn around, only to find Jackson down on one knee. Just as the moment began to sink in, Jackson’s second surprise arrived: their parents, beaming with excitement, showed up with hugs, smiles, and champagne to celebrate. They continued the celebration with a surprise party at their new home.
Aubrey knew the aesthetic they wanted when they proposed to Jules but needed help choosing the perfect location in Kansas City. After talking through ideas, we decided on Prospero’s Bookstore for a cozy, charming setting that fit their vibe. We started the session with coffee across the street, then wandered through the store, Jules thinking it was just a fun photoshoot to remember their trip. In a quiet corner, Aubrey got down on one knee. Jules had suspected a proposal was coming at some point but was still surprised in that moment. The people in the bookstore were thrilled to be around for something so special.
The more popular option for proposal photography is the hidden photographer. This is the best option when you have a specific idea in mind for proposing and don’t want your partner to be suspictious.
Juan reached out a few weeks before proposing at the Nelson Atkins Museum. The plan was carefully crafted with their families, he just needed a photographer to capture it. Leah thought she was there to pick up something for her sister’s art class. But as she stepped outside, she saw Juan waiting on the stairs, a bouquet of flowers in hand. After she said yes, their families came up with champagne and confetti. We spent around 15 minutes taking photos on the Nelson lawn before they left for a fancy dinner with the family. I’m looking forward to photographing their wedding in 2026!
Rem had his proposal planned out but decided last minute that he wanted a photographer to document it. We coordinated logistics of where he would pull Valerie to a stop at the JC Nichols fountain in Kansas City. I blended into the background, sitting on a bench nearby until the moment arrived. Valerie knew the proposal was coming, they had already started wedding planning, but she loved how Rem made the “official proposal” special.
