Kaitlin and Nathan’s wedding at The Oliver building in Kansas City was stunning. The Oliver Building is such a unique wedding venue. It is an old industrial building, it even still has the old slides, with three floors. Kaitlin and Nathan used the first floor for cocktail hour, the second floor for the ceremony and reception, and the third floor for the getting ready rooms.
Most getting ready rooms designated for the groom tend to feel like an afterthought. They usually seem like a closet. But The Oliver Building has two large getting ready spaces. The feminine space is huge, with its own bathroom, a seating area, and a wall of mirrors. The masculine space isn’t as large but it is the best secondary getting ready space I’ve seen at a venue. There’s plush leather couches, a large mirror, and a separate small space to change privately.
Kaitlin chose to share first looks with her bridesmaids, her dad and with Nathan. Making for so many special moments with her loved ones. During their first look, Kaitlin and Nathan chose to read their letters to each other in private. So we all backed away far enough so we couldn’t hear anything and were able to capture some beautiful photos from a distance. Kaitlin decided to play on an inside joke with Nathan and wore fuzzy crocks to the first look. It’s so much fun when couples are completely themselves on their wedding day!
The Oliver Building is in the West Bottoms district of Kansas City. Right in the heart of West Bottoms, so finding spots for photos was easy. We walked around the block and stopped at a couple places for their photos. Then joined the rest of the wedding party and family for the group photos. Having a November wedding means the sunsets early, around 5:00pm usually. So Kaitlin and Nathan wanted to make sure to get all of their photos done before the ceremony.
During the ceremony, Kaitlin’s dad and Nathan played a quick game of rock paper scissors right after Kaitlin and her dad walked down the aisle. Nathan won so he was able to marry Kaitlin! They chose to do a glass pouring unity ceremony, similar to sand. It became a game itself, to see who could pour out their glass pieces the fastest. Nathan won that game as well.
For dinner, they chose to have Minsky’s Pizza. Having been to many weddings, this is the first wedding since my own that I’ve seen serve pizza and I was so excited for it. After dinner, Kaitlin had a little surprise for Nathan. She hired KC Wolf to come hang out at the reception! So they danced the night away with KC Wolf.
